There are many concepts that can be gathered together under the term initiation, from formal initiation into a group of some kind, to passing through the challenges and tests life give us in order to break through to deeper truths and new ways of being.
The Gods Themselves, and other kinds of spirits and powers, can initiate us into Their mysteries, into Their service, through ceremony or through what a good friend of mine calls “level ups” – moments of crisis that leave us irrevocably altered, and intimately connected to the Initiator. Seemingly spontaneous initiations from unseen powers are the kinds of initiations I have on my mind for this creative prompt, because these are the kinds of initiations that are both most familiar and most precious to me.
These level-ups are sometimes frightening, sometimes even painful, but I’ve always found myself grateful for them in the long run. Life is often difficult anyway: the difficulty is more bearable when it leads to rich spiritual connections.
Questions to ponder:
What is initiation to you? .
Have you ever undergone a formal initiation into a group or society?
Think about some of the most difficult times in your life, when you felt like the challenges you faced were almost too much for you.
When you survived those challenges, how did you feel?
What skills and wisdom did you gain from those challenges, if any?
Were there any ways in which you were changed for the bettter?
On reflection, does it seem like the experience was a kind of initiation?
If so, into what?
