Fall Equinox brings those of us in the Northern Hemisphere to the edge of the dark half of the year. In the dark months, I find reflection, scrying and vision work easier, and I love to work with plants who strengthen my inner sight during this time.
The Herbs
Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) is one of the most frequently used herbs for strengthening dreams and visions. And I also find that, while she might show me things that are uncomfortable, she also keeps me safe during trance journeys. A note of caution: if you’re allergic to plants in the Asteraceae family, mugwort might cause respiratory or skin irritation. You could substitute rose, peppermint, or any other plant you like to work with for the same purpose.
Thyme (Thymus vulgaris) is another plant who can strengthen your second sight. She especially has an affinity for helping us to see spirits.
Garden sage (Salvia officinalis) is a cleansing herb who also offers protection, and helps seek wisdom. Note that this is the common garden sage, often used in cooking, not the white sage used by many native American tribes.
Other Supplies
Sea salt is wonderful for cleansing/purification, including dissolving energetic blocks that might get in the way of clear sight. You can also use kosher salt or cheap table salt, but I like sea salt best.
For this bath, you really do need to use a proper mason jar, not a jar you saved from jam or sauce. Mason jars are made to withstand boiling water, which might crack other glass vessels. If you don’t have a mason jar with a lid, you can brew your herbs in any heat proof vessel with a lid.
The stones I suggest are ones I enjoy working with, and have worked with for a long time. I find that labradorite amplifies my sense of the Other, and tourmaline feels deeply protective and energetically clearing for me. Use them if you have them, but there’s no need to go buy them if you don’t. I always recommend keeping it simple, and working with what you already have on hand.
Dark Season Psychic Bath
You will need:
- 1/4 cup dry or 1 cup fresh mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) leaves and/or flowers
- 1/4 cup dry or 1 cup fresh thyme (Thymus vulgaris)
- 1/4 cup dry or 1 cup fresh garden sage (Salvia officinalis) leaves
- a wide mouth, quart size mason jar
- freshly boiled water
- 1 cup sea sa
Optional:
- Small piece of labradorite
- Small piece of black tourmaline or jet
- Votive candles or tea lights
Place your herbs in the jar and pour just-boiled water over them until the jar is full. Cap tightly, and place your stones (if you are using them) on or around the jar.
Let steep for at least four hours, up to eight hours.
Strain the infusion into a clean jar
Run a hot bath, and add your quart of infusion to the water.
When there are a few inches of water in the tub, add sea salt, and stir clockwise with your dominant hand until it dissolves in the water. As you stir, focus on your intentions for the bath.
Place stones around the tub if you are using them.
Light candles, and turn off or dim electric lights, if you wish.
Soak in for at least ten minutes, but twenty minutes is ideal. Close your eyes, breath in the fragrant steam, and focus on relaxing your body. Set your intention to strengthen and develop your second sight and your connection to the spirit world. Ask the sage and salt to remove obstacles to clear vision. Ask the mugwort and thyme to strengthen your magical and psychic abilities.
If you wish to amplify the effects of the plants, sleep with a little pouch of the dried herbs under your pillow, and/or place the pouch of dried herbs over your third eye as you do trance work.
Repeat as desired.
